About us

Our ties to history start with the historic name of our restaurant; Vecio Fritolin has its roots in "fritolini" places where, since the 8th Century, people could buy just-fried fish. The custom of buying fish from "fritolini" lessened when a ban on open fireplaces became law.
The building containing the restaurant is also steeped in history as the original architecture, dating from the 6th Century, has been conserved. The restaurant is situated in "Calle della Regina" and is the birthplace of the Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro (1454 - 1510), a wealthy descendant of a noble Venetian family. The history of Caterina Cornaro.
"Offering the best of traditional Venetian cuisine revisited with creativity and lightness" is the main objective of Irina Freguia, proprietor of the restaurant. A genuine Venetian from the island of Giudecca, Irina has cultivated a special passion for the city and its traditions.
In 1985 Irina started her career as a restaurateur. After running various establishments the Vecio Fritolin emerged in 2001 where, from the very first day, Irina has offered unique combinations of dishes and flavours which have enriched the Venetian gastronomic tradition with new and exciting interpretations.
At Vecio Fritolin the freezer is banned! Our guests are able to experience a variety of gastronomic flavours using fresh, seasonal produce and ingredients sourced daily from the Rialto Markets.
The seafood is always fresh that day, selected personally by Irina and the restaurant chef from the fish market; each dish enriched with fresh vegetables and herbs.
Of course the secret ingredient in every dish served at the restaurant is Venice. Eat at the restaurant and know that the dish before you is the result of a culinary evolution spanning hundreds of years. At Vecio Fritolin Venice is not only about views from a bridge or a vaporetto: it can be tasted. And rest assured that even at the table Venice can still surprise....
